Turn Around time for thinkpads/t60 warranty?

Hi folks... I own a t60 for school. It sort of needs to be fixed a bit. The screen has loosened, there is a screw missing, one of the cooling fans sounds like its grinding bearings, and a piece of plastic chipped off. I'm going to be on vacation and sort of need my laptop during it, and then when I get back I am going to be studying overseas for a semester, and during that my warranty will expire. So basically I have a two week gap between getting back from vacation and leaving overseas, and I am trying to figure out if I will have enough time for warranty repairs. The laptop still works, I guess as a testament to its durability. It's been used pretty heavily for three years and fits my school needs.

Thank you.

Most laptop depot repairs take 3-4 business days -- 1 day transit each way plus 1-2 days in the repair depot.

If you don't really need it, I'd advise sending it now.

...and then when I get back I am going to be studying overseas for a semester, and during that my warranty will expire.
You might want to look into extending the warranty too.

Second Athena's comments. However - good luck on warranty repairs. What you described is the result of abuse and use, not equipment failure. An extension of the warranty may not be viable.

I have just returned from Europe with my T60. It has been all over - South America, South Africa, and many places across the USA. It has fallen off of an airport security table on to a concrete floor - no damage at all. It is a tough machine. To have the damage you describe really shows abuse beyond warranty coverage.

Eh.. You'd be surprised what they fix... they may not bother with the broken chassis components, but they may replace the missing screw while they are at the job of fixing the fan which should be a warranty item.

I used depot for ThinkPad twice. Once in 1997 for my 701c Butterfly.... Fried the modem in a PBX.. they fixed the modem, but also replaced the bottom cover of the ThinkPad as it was cracked. Now... The 701c was known for those cracks, but I was still surprised they fixed it. Took 72 hours to send and get back.

The second time was just a few months ago on a T61. System ran Vista 32 fine, but would not recover to Vista 64 or Vista 32 from the Lenovo media. I tested everything, and they ended up replacing the planar. Again... only 72 hours from send to return.

I have the accidental damage warranty for it as well. The screen has always been a bit loose, it basically has a cm or play from what position its in. The screw popping out surprised the hell out of me, I've taken it apart before to change ram, but that screw that fell out is for the hard drive. I've never touched it, it just plopped out and I've been keeping the cover on with duct tape. And the plastic chipping struck me as odd. On the sides of the screen, there are small tabs which go into indentions on the sides of the top of the chassis. It's like a little valley thing, I guess to reduce pressure applied to the screen. That is where the chip happened. A sliver fell off. I'm guessing the plastic got weakened from pressure or something.

But thanks for the good news about the warranty time, I was worried it'd be closer to a week or two for repairs.

The hard drive retaining screw is a known issue on the T60's. They will replace that and seeing as you have the protection pan, all else should be covered.

That is interesting. My T60 came with a spare screw. However, I remove that screw about twice a month in order to swap HDDs . it has never been a problem. Always take care not to over tighten it.

Lenovo was great to me. I dropped my x61t on tile from about 5 feet while it was on - the only thing that broke was a piece of the chassis (tablet pen holder). Called support, they overnighted me a pre paid ups box (also 1 day delivery). I got my tablet back before I was expecting it (I think it was about 2 days since I dropped it off at the ups store).
