Turn a domain controller into a NAS

We have a old server running a unsupported operating system from Windows. I want to convert it to a NAS.

I can reformat and reinstall Windows
or
Format to a Linux NAS

What do you recommend?
 
How comfortable are you with Linux?

Either would be fine - if you 're working in a mostly Windows environment, using Windows Server probably isn't a terrible idea.
