Turkey fryer questions

I'm ready to fry a turkey today and have a few questions. And to get it out of the way - we are cooking in the open driveway in front of my house to stay away from the house.

1. It's raining. How much of a problem is this?
2. If it is a problem, what are the drawbacks to putting the turkey in cold oil and heating it while covered (with the thermometer sticking out, of course).

Thanks.

1. Put something over the fryer to cover it completely from the rain. Water dropping in hot oil - lots of splattering. Dangerous.

2. I'm not sure why you'd want to do this when you can easily do it the accepted way. Let the bird get to room temperature, at least 30 minutes, get your oil up to 250F, then lower the bird in very slowly. Once in, up the temperature to 350F and cook for 3 - 3.5 minutes per pound.

You need to put it in hot oil, not warm it up in cold oil. I imagine that would be terrible.

And you know what happens when water gets into hot oil right? I hope you have some heavy welding gloves and a mask if you intend to do this in the rain :p

Both your posts are pretty much what I was expecting and I didn't want to go forward without confirmation. I was just hoping there would be a way to salvage this and fry today. Looks like it's going in the oven and I'll fry a turkey when the rain lets up.

/I like Seattle, but I could do without the rainy time of year.

It would absorb the oil making it an oily turkey sponge.
