It's only offensive when a republican commits the deed. The brits? Different horses for different courses, or something like that.

Around a third of the world gives the death penalty to gays. Almost all are Muslim countries, we never hear a peep about that though. You would think Progressives would be all over that but no! Instead they dwell on what happened 60+ years ago.

Turing made major contributions at Bletchley Park as well as to Computer Science.

What happened to him was shameful.

In many ways, what happened to Turing seems analogous to what happened to Oppenheimer. (Though, Oppenheimer had his clearance removed because of his alleged communist affiliations.)

The Royal Pardon doesn't change anything. But as an acknowledgement of past mistakes, it seems appropriate. Only question is why did it take so long?

There are 8 counties and one wannabe country (Somaliland) that have the death penalty for homosexuality. The only large (as in population) country with such a law is Nigeria which is roughly 50/50 Islamic/Christian.

Hardly a third of the world.

In point of fact Indonesia, the largest Islamic country by population (over 200 million/over 13% of all Muslims in the world), is listed as having homosexuality as legal except for one province.

So your point is what?

The reality is that a very small number of, mostly, small countries that are mostly Islamic have the death penalty for homosexuals. Those laws have been and are now being protested by individuals, organizations and governments around the world.

If you wish to crap on the smallest of steps taken to right a wrong from 70 years ago the least that you can do is use something that is true/makes sense.

And maybe we could hear your opinion on the various American evangelical Christian leaders who were lobbying Angola to add the death penalty for homosexuality when the govt. was in the process of changing the country's laws recently. Would that be something that these "Progressives" you speak of should be concerned about as well?

He shouldn't have been doing it in a public park. Keep that stuff in the closet.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to participating in a discussion or debate is that you should actually know something about the subject under debate/discussion.

"In January 1952, Turing, then 39, started a relationship with Arnold Murray, a 19-year-old unemployed man. Turing met Murray just before Christmas outside the Regal Cinema when walking down Manchester's Oxford Road and had invited him to lunch. On 23 January Turing's house was burgled. Murray told Turing that the burglar was an acquaintance of his, and Turing reported the crime to the police. During the investigation he acknowledged a sexual relationship with Murray. Homosexual acts were criminal offences in the United Kingdom at that time,[94] and both men were charged with gross indecency under Section 11 of the Criminal Law Amendment Act 1885.[95] Initial committal proceedings for the trial occurred on 27 February, where Turing's solicitor "reserved his defence"."

Not a public park to be found.

Of course it's offensive, but most people aren't going to react the same way to events that happened 60 years ago under long repealed laws.. If it were happening in the UK today that'd be a very different story.

59 years after his death? Pretty glacial turn.

Did the Queen ever acknowledge the Poles who actually developed the code which broke the German cyphers and were then shamefully relegated to low level, unimportant code work? If not, I suggest that this acknowledgement and a pardon of EVERY person convicted of homosexuality would be a better turn.

From the article in the OP:
"The problem is, of course, if there was a general pardon for men who had been prosecuted for homosexuality, many of them are still alive and they could get compensation."

How convenient, save a few pounds and let people die with that stigma, then probably apologize for that too.

Yeah. I really didn't understand the compensation part anyway since they were convicted of what were crimes at the time, but the thought of a bunch of old homosexuals getting money for being imprisoned for homosexuality seems like a pretty harmless use of government money, all things considered. But if you want people to really think you're a bunch of dicks, just wait to announce that since the last person imprisoned for homosexuality has just died, you can now pardon all the imprisoned homosexuals not important enough have been individually pardoned, then point out how much money you've saved.
