Does anyone know if TurboTax still has that anti-piracy thing where it writes information into your boot sector? I remember a big deal about this a couple years ago. I switched to TaxCut then, so I'm not sure if TurboTax dropped that after customer outcry.

I've been a TT user since '97. I recal the debacle a year or two ago. Cloned my system before installing the last few years, but there has been no issue for me. I'll go the lonesome George route and say it's probably something they've deep six'd, then again YMMV. 😀

Yeah, huge outcry, lots of folks didn't buy Quicken. Lo and behold, they dropped it. Looks like they didn't have as much a lock on the market as they thought. I certainly did hate Tax Cut though. No where near as polished.

Taxcut sucked sometime in the 90's, have you used it recently?

I used taxcut for a couple years - went to turbo tax when taxcut had problems - went back to taxcut because I will never, ever use turbotax for what they did. I never tried taxact but may give it a spin parallel to taxcut and see how they compare.

Be certain that taxcut supports all that you need before you by it. I bought the highest level of taxcut last year, only to have taxcut support tell me to buy turbotax basic to fufill my needs, and they weren't that unusual. After using both last year, I can say Turbotax is a step up in both features and interface.

For the vast majority of us, either Turbotax or Taxcut are essentially the same and will do everything you need. I've used both several times. These days, I'm more inclined to Taxcut because I still hold a grudge about the copy protection scheme Turbotax instituted. They dropped that protection not because they realized it was customer unfriendly, but because of the larger than expected negative customer reaction. I'd prefer to deal with a company that is customer friendly by choice, not because it got forced into it.

I got some coupons from Costco the other day....

TurboTax Deluxe
34.99
-10 coupon (came in mail)
-10 rebate from Intuit
---------------
14.99 Final Price.

I also suspect there will be a "free electronic filing" coupon in box.....

Even if you don't have the $10 coupon, the in-store member price will be cheaper than this thread.....
(Come to think of it, I bet someone will start a Costco TurboTax thread.....)
