Tuniq Tower vs. Scythe Mine

When I build my new rig with a Conroe E6400 I expect to overclock it as much as possible, the Scythe Mine isn't a whole lot cheaper than the Tuniq Tower, would it be smart to go with the Tuniq Tower instead? Is there a big diffrence between the two? Thanks.

Probably the TT 120, then. That comes with a fan that runs at 2000 RPM at 12V, from what I see.

a better question should be will it ever come in STOCK? Because everyone is having a hell of a hard time finding it avalible. Also, by then there will be new generations of coolers to come out so why not just wait til conroe comes out to see what zalman and thermalright, has to offer.

BTW, the SI-128 by thermalright might be a better cooler.

Heh! I've got a Tuniq on back-order... so I can tell you, from personal experience, that's one MAJOR difference. You can pick up a Scythe Mine anywhere. Tuniq T-120s are scarce as hen's teeth!

Secondly, the Tuniq is made for massive cooling. It'll dissipate, like, 200w with no problem, if you blow enough air through it, but its' design requires a LOT of air! So, if you want to make it work to maximum efficiency, it going to be noisy... guaranteed!

The Scythe Mine, on the other hand, is designed to the quiet. It won't dissipate anywhere near the same amount of heat, but it doesn't require a lot of air either. Basically, the Mine is designed to work somewhat better than a factory reference HS, with a LOT less noise.

To exemplify the noise situation:

Almost every review I've read on the Tuniq has commented about how loud the fan is. You can always lower the fan speed, of course, but the cooling drops off rather quickly because of the tightly spaced fins, and so forth. It's not a good candidate for low fan speed operation!

However, every review I've read on the Mine has commented on how quiet it is. One reviewer said he had to get a flashlight and look inside the fins, because he thought the fan was dead! It wasn't! It was just that silent...

To wrap this up, IMHO, while they look similar in design, they're really two different animals. So, it all depends on what you're looking for -- maximum cooling and maximum noise, or minimal cooling and minimal noise.

LoL! No kidding! I'll tell you how bad it is...

Tuniq T-120s are so hard to find that I feel fortunate having one on back-order! Most places aren't even accepting new orders. You have to get on a mailing list, and they'll supposedly contact you when they're available again, e.g. "Don't call us, we'll call you!"

i have a Mine w/ a 120mm blue LED yate loon and i say its a great cooler. i never tried the stock fan so i can't say anything about it. but i've heard its pretty quiet. madshrimps reviewed it and said that its comparable with the Ninja when both are using the same fan.

However, speaking of Conroe and Tuniq, I don't know if you've seen this...

Conroe E6600 Stepping 5/Tuniq Tower T-120 = 4GHz on air!

It showcases the raw potential of the Conroe with a Tuniq T-120...

Thats nothing unusual...
My 3,2 EE is at present time at 4.0 on air.
I have had it as high as 4.4 on air for several months.
I had it to 4,4 using the zalman 9500.
Now its at 4.0 using the XP 120.
The Zalman is in my gaming rigg.

A dual core cpu stock @2.4, OC to 4Ghz 1.65v doing Super Pi 32M in 13 mins, and 1M around 12sec, with cpu temp at low 40's......umm yeah i'd say thats nothing unusual... :Q

It doesn't look like a major difference to me when the same fan is used. (ie 2 degrees in favor of TT):

Mine vs. Ninja vs. TT120

In fact the Mine does better then TT120 at lower fan speeds. (ie 50% = 5 degrees better cooling with Mine)

I agree the TT120 looks like an excellent cooler but Mine is neck and neck with it and has a superior mount and less mass and it's actually available.

err i would get at least an E6600 conroe if u want to OC... since it has a higher multiplier, and that will make a difference in overclocking. tower120 is only needed when ur gonna hit around 4GHZ. i have one on a P4 3.0 oced to 3.6 and its only 56 degrees! primed 24hours (2000rpm)

the only places that have tower 120 now is taiwan and hong kong... tower 120 is the way to go imo but get a better conroe first

uhhh your confusing your chips. The conroe is more like an AMD going from 2.4 ghz to 4ghz, while your p4 going from 3.2 - 4.0. You gave a really poor example of overclocking because anyone will tell you its a greater accomplishment going from 2.4 -> 4ghz then it is going from 3.2 to 4.0 expecially if your chip is the EE edition where ur multi can go as high as 40x

True again!

LoL! Well, I just ordered a Scythe Mine, so I guess I'll have a lot of time to test it before my Tuniq Tower gets here -- if it gets here...

I also ordered a Masscool/Sytrin KuFormula VF1 Plus GPU cooler, so, if you'll pardon the pun, I *think* I got all my basis covered!

In other words, nobody has them. I've had a TT-120 on b/o for weeks -- settled on a Scythe 'Mine 3' ( for now) -- but most places aren't even taking new orders right now...

IMO, that's not enough to justify the $20 (or more) price difference.
The EE multi can go to 40x? That's mind boggling!
Personally, I'd like the mine for it's smaller design when pitted against the ninja, but I'm pretty sure any hsf will fit into the lian li pc7b +2

Heh! Given the opportunity, I'll be glad to eat my words!

When the Tuniq Tower shows, I'll put them both to the test. If there's >2 degree difference, the winner stays, and the loser goes on eBay for pennies on the wholesale dollar! Otherwise, I'll keep them both, with apologies all around...

Fair enough? ;)

This 'broken machine' theory that's floating around is B.S. IMHO!

Bottom line: You can't order one!

Heh! Never seen anything like it!

These guys accidently made the best air-cooler in the world! And, they simply cannot keep up with the demand...

From my understanding, the only place in the world that has them in stock is Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Go figure! :)
