Haha. I did fly in Tu-154. It was all right. Not like I cared when I was 5. But AN-2 is an experience on to itself. It's a biplane crop duster, 50 year old design that is used for pretty much everything from ambulance to airmail. I flew with my parents into the Caucasus mountains when I was a little kid. Flying between these peaks on a tiny airplane is something hard to forget. It's gorgeous view, but it feels like a gust of wind could smash this thing into the cliff. And after I got out I vomited like you would not believe. I was 5 years old, and I still remember. That's probably not very relevant, except that it was in Dagestan, same place where this plane was hijacked from. This is a heavily Muslim part of Russia (next to Chechnya), so I don't know who from there would want to fly to Israel. It's really bizarre.
Oh, flying in Russia is as dangerous as doing anything there: Very. I remember that one time in the news that the captain let his toddler son steer the airplane, and everyone got killed as the result. So much for take your kids to work day.
