At full power this baby seems to draw 8 Watts. Is it ok to hook it up to the mobo pwer header? I hope it wont blow away at that load.

no, do not connect to the motherboard.

to monitor rpm pull the third wire out and attach it to the 3rd pin on a motherboard fan header.

The SCF 2 actually came with an adpater for this purpose. I had thought it was just a usual 3pin to 4 pin adapter, with no rpm connector to mobo. me wrong.
Thanks for the help.

Actually, I had it on the mobo for a couple of days and running at full speed. Looks like it doesn't necessarily blow the fan socket - at least not in the short run.

I don't know, I'd just play it safe and get it off the mobo. Smart Fan II = cheaper than mobo
