Hi Guys,

I need to buy a cheap cooler for my core2duo e4300 that will be running at 2.7-2.9ghz...
I was about to buy Freezer 7 pro, but i've found a deal for a second hand TT Big Typhoon for about the same price, its about a year old...but the seller claims its in good condition..
So guys, tell me which is the better cooler overall...and help me decide which is a better deal..

Regards,

Get the Tuniq Tower 120 instead...performs better than the Big Typhoon and costs about the same

^^hmm..its about a $50 cooler but i have $20 budget...besides i will not be making it run at extreme clocks, just around 2.7-3ghz, so a mid range cooler can handle it well, won't it?

Oh in that case just get the Freezer 7 Pro since it's about $20 and is about the best thing you can get in that price range...unless you somehow manage to find a Big Typhoon for the same price :D

^^Well as i said, I did but its second hand..so somewhat reluctant to go ahead w/ it unless performance differance is large..

Big Typhoon does perform better than the Freezer 7 pro by a decent margin. However, either one of them would be good enough for a Core 2 Duo at 3Ghz. Get whatever you want.

The Freezer 7 would do the job, but the Typhoon would do the job better. However I personally prefer the tower coolers (like the Freezer 7) because they blow the exhaust air directly out the rear exhaust fan. But get whichever, like I said either one would work. If the Typhoon really is in good condition and all, it would most likely keep the chip cooler so in that sense it's the better deal, but really it's just whichever you prefer since you're only gonna be cooling a C2D at 3GHz.

If you get the Big Typhoon and its base isn't in very good condition, you could just lap it :D

Okay, just a quick check, apart from the fan what can go bad in a second hand heatsink, anything specific to look for..?

Deep gouges on the bottom of the heatsink would be about all, and those can be sanded away, if they aren't too deep.

I have yet to use my AC Pro 7, but I am kinda so-so on my BT. This thing is heavy!!! I am worried that it will rip the CPU socket right off the Mobo. It seems to cool pretty well, but I am using the Freezer on my next build.

Here is an interesting comp of the two.

Hmm...interesting review, it seems to suggest that Freezer 7 has better performance over tt-bt but has some installation issues, maybe mobo specific but what about the Asus p5b vanilla, any known issues with either of them?
I donno this review has confused me more, as i thought tt-bt would have better performance due to 120mm fan compared ac 7's 92mm..

One more thing, i never installed an after market cooler yet, so tt-bt with backplate n' all, is it tough to install?

My Big Typhoon keeps my E6400 @ 3400mhz at 52*C at full load.

The installation on the Freezer 7 Pro is a breeze though. I just installed the AC 7 Pro on my friend's E6600 and it's running very quiet.

Big Typhoon cooling 3500mhz Core 2 Duo
Big Typhoon at Firingsquad

Even though both coolers are sufficient to run Core 2 Duo at 3.4-3.5ghz or even more, I'd go for Big Typhoon because at the very least you have a 120mm fan you can carry over to another cooler in the future should you want to. This makes it a better value.

My BT was a pain in the ass to install. Mostly because of issues with the DFI board. It still doesn't fit quite as snug as I would like. Again, the weight is the concern for me. A jolt here and there from doing various things (CMOS clearing, redoing cabling etc.) could knock the HS off base a little.

I think the BT is 800+ where the AC is 520 or something like that.

So if you get similar cooling for $30 less, with less weight. I would say no brainer.

Don't take my word for it. Look at the 676 reviews @ TheEgg

I'm using the AC Freezer 7 Pro on my E6600 and have my BIOS set to kick in the fan fully at 55*C. I very rarely hear it spooling up even whist gaming, and during the day room temps are at around 28*C at the moment. Fitting is a breese (excuse the pun:)) and I'm sure having the thing venting towards the rear case fan helps things along a bit.
