TSA Screening Procedures for Android Tablets, iPad, and other small electronics

I was reading that tablet pcs and ipads no longer have to be removed from cases when going through xrays at security checkpoints. Can anyone confirm this from personal experience? I am taking a group on an overseas trip and there will likely be all manner of mobile devices (not including the traditional laptop). I would like to give some guidance as to what expect from the TSA. I would hate get complaints about those nice touch-screens being scratched up!

When I flew two weeks ago they didn't care about tablets, I asked them and they said to just leave it in my carry-on
