Does anyone know if a processor, motherboard, harddrive, etc will be damaged by the equipment that TSA uses in airports to scan the contents of bags?

I know that laptops don't get effected but they also have a casing. What about a retail boxed processor or retail boxed motherboard?

I am heading out of town and they have a Fry's that i'm bound to visit and pick up some items. I won't be checking any bags so whatever items I pick up will be put in my carry on and will go through security.

Suggestions? If it doesn't damage computer hardware equipment, will they find it suspicious (especially a motherboard since it looks like something from another planet to someone that doesn't know what it is)?

TSA XRay machines are no problem for computer electronics in or out of laptop cases.

The only problem that could arise would be due to a malfunction of the scanning machine - and that is not likely because the operator would get a fault alarm.

I carry stuff through all the time - scans laptop, extra HDDs, external HDD, DSLR, lenses, accessories, chargers, cell phone, etc. Never a problem except for the time I left my camera on the table. :)

I've never heard of any problems with the TSA scanners messing with electronic equipment.

Do they look at it suspiciously? I don't want to get to the airport, start going through security, they stop me and say "that can't go through, you have to toss it!"

I had a computer built into a suitcase, such that to a random nub it would look very much like some type of atomic weapon. It went through airport security not once but twice, each time receiving the maximum amount of tests they had at hand. No damaged was caused. ^_^
