I purchased a new H81 based motherboard and G3220 processor.

I'm trying to use an older 350w powersupply that was decent quality 7 years ago.

The powersupply has a 20 pin power lead, where the new H81 motherboard has a 24 pin socket.

I purchased a 20->24pin "converter", and the system is not powering up.
(The fans plugged into fan controller which is directly tied to power supply power up, but the CPU fan and GPU fan do not come up. Note that I do have a 4-pin power cable that is just for CPU.. that is plugged in.)

Is there a requirement for all 24pins on the Haswell?
My Googling skills didn't net a succinct answer.

Well, I yanked the P/S out of the case and hovered it in the middle of the case so the regular cables would work.

Seems like I got a bad 20->24 ping converter.

There is no point to a 20 to 24 pin converter. It's a marketing ploy, not that the extra 4 pins need power, they are electrically connected to the other 20. It does nothing of benefit.

The extra four are so there are more wires carrying current IF the PSU had more wires to a 24 pin connector. It won't matter unless the system has a very high current need, which it certainly won't have if a 350W PSU is enough.
