Trying to use dialup networking, but it's giving me very weird problems...

My university has a dialup system for remote access to their network and whatnot and I've been trying to use my phone as a Bluetooth modem and connect my PocketPC to the internet that way.

That being said, I don't need help with the phone part or anything like that... my issue appears to be with the network end of things.

The dialup system they have is rather odd and you dial the number without a login and password, and then use a Terminal screen to log in. Once you do that, the instructions state to type in "ppp" to enable peer-to-peer mode, which will allow net access. Whenever I type in "ppp", this happens:

Local>ppp
Entering PPP mode.
Async interface address is unnumbered (FastEthernet0)
Your IP address is 136.142.22.7. MTU is 1500 bytes
Header compression will match your system.

}(}"D ~~ }#À!}! } }4}"}&} }*} } }%}&6}"8 }'}"}(}"}-}*~
NO CARRIER

Immediately after I type in "ppp", it starts printing out that random gibbrish and then the call is dropped a few seconds later. The very weird thing is that when I close the terminal after typing in "ppp" (immediately after I type it in), I can browse and everything... most of the time. As long as I'm constantly reciving "different" data (i.e. from different sections of a webpage, changing sites every few seconds, etc.) it stays connected. The second I try and check my e-mail or download a file (something that only connects to one server for an extended period of time and since it's only a 14.4K connection since it's via a cell phone, it all takes a while), it drops the connection after 30 or so seconds.

Does anyone have any idea why the connection gets dropped for these seemingly random reasons and what I can do to remedy it? I would try dialing in on my desktop to see if it's something with my PocketPC, but my desktop doesn't have Bluetooth.

I see you're at the University of Pittsburgh. I remember that this one was of the first problems I ever encountered when I was first becoming interested in computers... back in... 94 or 95? I was trying to help my mom connect to her office's network (Ohio State University's Agriculture Dept... cannot recount how many times I took the name of "agvax2" in vain... lol).

IIRC, immediately after typing 'ppp', to begin PPP mode, you need to click "Continue", or hit the function key for the continue button... I can't remember if it's even called "continue".

I haven't used that system in nine or ten years now, and when I set up the connections for my mom's office, I scripted it, so that whatever username and password they put in the DUN box was echoed back to the remote server in the appropriate place, and all they had to do was click "continue" when the box came up (assuming there were no errors on screen).

If none of this made sense to you, post a screenshot of the box that this is in, and I'm sure my mind will be a bit clearer after I see it, so I can explain it better.

Yeah, when I click on "continue", the terminal appears to close and I can use the connection normally (somewhat).

After clicking continue, though, it does what I mentioned later in the post... as long as I'm constantly loading content from different servers, it stays connected. The second I do something that connects to a single server for a long time (i.e. check my e-mail or doing a speed test), it will attempt to load for 30 or so seconds before dropping the call. Normally it wouldn't matter, but I'm only connecting at 14.4K since it's via a cell phone and quite a few things take more time to load than I can stay connected.

This has me really frustrated... the only thing I really want to do is be able to check my e-mail with this when the cable goes out (it's pretty shaky where I'm living), but I can't even maintain a connection long enough to do that.

Hrmmm... I don't recall having any issues with that exact problem. Most of the connection problems I've had to troubleshoot were in the actual connection process. You're definitely connecting OK if you can connect to websites...

I honestly don't know, off of the top of my head. I'm sure that your university has a support dept that handles your question with ease, though. ;)

Yeah, I'll have to give their tech support a call and ask them, though I doubt they'll be of any help because they'll probably tell me using a cell phone and a PocketPC isn't supported.

And I haven't tried it with a landline yet, as I forgot my computer even had a modem, but I might give it a try.

Thanks for all the help.
