I am thinking about buying a copy of the W2K Pro Upgrade OEM version. I just bought a new, bare HD that I would want to install W2K on. Right now I am using Win 98 on my'old' HD. Do I have to install Win98 on the new HD, THEN install W2K Pro on top of it??

I thought I could just install W2K Pro on the new HD, and while in the set up install program of W2K; I can insert my WIN 98 install disc into my CD-Rom drive and then W2K Pro install program can verify that I have a valid upgrade path??

Am I missing something here, if I do buy the W2K Pro OEM disc?

Thanks for anyone who can help.

That's the way it goes, pain in the ass but the only way.

Heck no, don't install Win98 first! Just insert the Win98 installation CD when W2K Pro's setup program asks for it! And install-over of W2K on top of Win98 would give you a TERRIBLE system!

What do you mean when you refer to an OEM version, though? Aren't you just buying a retail W2K Pro package?

I am thinking about buying the OEM version of W2K pro from Directdeals.com, they sell it for $96. There is no point in me upgrading to W2K pro, if I have to install it on top of Win 98, I just know it will cause so many problems. There is no way in my right mind that I would ever install W2K on top of Win 98; if it's in any way possible not to. I e-mailed them to ask the same question, and they said that the Install of W2K pro is not possible on a clean HD; that I must first already have Win98 on the HD?

But I have a feeling that they may be wrong about this. Can anyone reassure me, or give me the 411? Thanks a lot.

If inserting the Win98 cd doesn't work, I upgraded my Win98 box to Win2k with 98 already installed (came preloaded). You can have the Win2k setup format and install over the 98 partition, and in the end, it will be as if 98 was never there.

net1994,

I'd listen to dirtboy. I'm not aware of any reason why an "OEM" Windows version upgrade would behave differently from a standard upgrade version. I thought the difference between OEM and the standard retail version was only in the source of support. If you have an OEM version, you get the support from the vendor. Otherwise, your support comes from Microsoft. Don't know who you'd be calling for tech support under these circumstances, but the online resources are so good these days I can't imagine that you'd need to call Microsoft.

This is weird stuff. I know that Microsoft is trying to protect its intellectual property rights, but it seems to me that they're really muddying the waters. I can't imagine that that will do anything to reduce "piracy".

Hope the upgrade goes well for you!

Regards,
Jim
