on Win7 64bit Ultimate

I have a socket AM3 Gigabyte GA-770TA-UD3 mobo - http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3272#ov

I researched for the best processors my mobo would support and found that I could go to an X6 black edition processor. http://www.gigabyte.us/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=3272

I just happened to find an X6 1090t locally. However, after I installed, it went through the BIOS, said it was updating firmware, then powers down. Nothing happens. I tried 3 times unseating / re-applying thermal paste/heatsink, but had the same outcome each time.

I put my X4 back in and everything booted fine. Could my power supply be inadequate? Would that prevent me from booting up past the BIOS?

My power supply only has one 4 pin power cable while the mobo(I guess) can accept 8 pins seen here -> http://imgur.com/lB9A7Li

I'm not sure if my quad-core is the 95 or 125 Watt (my gut feeling is that it's the 125 because I think I found it cheaper at the time) and the X6 shows 125 Watt.

any thoughts?

F3 or higher BIOS?

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3272#bios

F3
1. Update AGESA 3.6.6.0 for AMD 6core CPU
2. Support GIGABYTE On/Off Charge

If not, flash the BIOS with your current x4 installed power completely down and back up. Reset BIOS settings then power down and install the X6.

You know.. i'm not sure what version of the BIOS I'm on.. that's a great catch. i'll check that as soon as i get home.

thanks a ton.

I would not expect it to "update fimware". Try putting the chip in, clear CMOS (either short the pins or take the battery out for a few seconds). If that fails, install the latest bios with your X4 and try again.

I highly doubt your lack of an 8 pin power connector is a problem.

Upgrade the bios to the latest version, before installing the new chip. Remove the bios battery right before removing the old chip and then insert the battery after you finish installing the new chip.
