I boot from CD, but once the setup starts to run, before it gives me any choices I blue screen and get unmountable_boot_volume

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=297185

This says the file system is damaged. Windows 2000 loads just fine, so not sure if that is really the problem. I think it may be the drive as I can't get it to work in windows 2000. It says the drive is corrupt. I'm not sure why the computer is able to attempt to boot from it though if that is the case.

The microsoft support link also mentions to check the IDE cable and load fail-safe settings, but that if the stop error is NOT 0xC0000032, which it is.

anyway, to fix the disk it says to run chkdsk /r, but I can't get into the windows startup to do this. can I run that from cmd in windows 2000? Does it even make sense if windows 2000 loads without any problems?

Not sure if it could be the drive. I just connected it. It is an old pioneer DVD drive. There was an old CD-rom drive connected but I switched it to this DVD drive. I installed it the same way the CD drive was installed. The support link mentions something about a 40 wire UDMA cable / 80 wire cable but I don't really know what it is talking about. The drive is connected with an IDE cable. Not sure if there are different types. It is the one that used to be connected to the CD drive.

Any help is much appreciated

I think you need to try these steps:

To repair the volume, follow these steps:

1. Start your computer by inserting the Windows startup disks or the Windows installation disk if your computer can start from the CD drive.
2. When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option.
3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
4. Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do this.

Note If no administrator password exists, press ENTER.
5. At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER.
6. At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer.
7. After you repair the volume, check your hardware to isolate the cause of the file system damage.

If this procedure does not work, repeat it, but type fixboot instead of chkdsk /r in step 5.

This can be done from the windows 2000 cd .. and if all else fails, you can try installing XP fresh ... It will prompt you for the Windows 2000 CD for verification if your XP only has an upgrade license. I suggest you get all your personal / important files off the drive and also run Everest Home Edition and Belarc Advisor .. print out the results as it will have all your software Product and Installation keys and you may need them again.

alright, did the chkdsk but no fix. I think the problem is my DVD-drive. Not sure if i'm installing it incorrectly, but windows 2000 won't recognize it. Says the drive cant be accessed because it is corrupt. I hooked it up just like the CD-rom drive was connected. I don't know why it isn't working

Windows 2000 may not natively recognize a dvd drive ... try installing xp from the CD drive .. it can also be a bad cd or dvd drive
