Trying to upgrade an OEM 3Com/USRobotics modem to W2k, need help

I installed Windows 2000 on my system and I can't seem to get the modem driver updated to run faster than 28.8. Windows 2000 installed the modem automatically as a "3Com TI" When running windows 98, the modem would connect at about 50k.

I can't seem to determine what kind of modem this actually is. In windows 98, it lists it as a "US Robotics 56k Voice Win" Windows 2000 installed it as a "3Com TI" modem.

The modem is an ISA and it was part of an OEM system from Dell. I looked at the modem and it's stamped with "Sportster 0467" I called Dell and they told me the model was a "3Com/US Robotics Voice Win Modem" also known as a "Dingo 2" (I think the Dell tech was a Dingy 1) I downloaded software from US Robotics and it tells me it's a "US Robotics Win Modem V.90 56k Int"

I've pulled all sorts of numbers from the modem, no FCC number is listed, and can't seem to find what the hell it really is.

The maddening part is, if you go to the US Robotics Web site, they list seperate sections for Voice, Win and Sportster. Based on the info I've discovered, it looks like my modem can be any of those 3. Or maybe a combination of 2 or more.

I've tried using a 56k Winmodem driver, a Sportster driver and one other from the Windows 2000 driver database. None of them work.

I've looked at both the 3Com and US Robotics web sites, and none of the 6 or so numbers I've pulled off my modem match any numbers on their web sites.

I know I can go out and buy another modem....but I'm looking for help.

Any ideas on how I can find out what the heck my modem model actually is and or how to get it running faster than 28.8????

I belive there is a comprehensive modem flashing utility that will upgrade the firmware for you particular modem. As for the drivers, in the past I've had to just try all the different drivers till I found one that worked. You won't harm your system by doing that anyways.
