A friend of mine and myself have wanted to travel to Australia since we were freshman in college. We still have this dream to do this. We wanted to go for about three weeks, fly out on Christmas Day or the day after Christmas and come back three weeks later. What I was wondering is -- what is the cheapest way to travel around in Australia?

We are going to have spend a lot on plane tickets, yes. However, when we get there, where should we stay? We've googled around and found some pretty legit hostels to stay at and some other cool places to visit. But how do we keep the costs down?

Any tips appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure what you are asking? You've already looked at making the biggest expense, lodging, the least expensive so you're probably already covered 80% of the costs of the trip (airfare/room). Now just find out if its worth renting a car, or if you want to travel around by alternative means.

Daily stuff like food and stuff to buy is all up to you.

swimming would be the cheapest possible route.

You might be able to build your own boat and use those shatty paddles.

Does anyone know anything about doing courier work?

I am highly interested in this... sounds like a great way to go. Saving boat loads of money on a plane ticket? PERFECT.

Oddly enough, it might be cheaper to fly to London first. England is a hub of cheap flights to former parts of their empire.

Another hub of cheap flights to many place is Athens, Greece.
