Trying to take a picture of a diamond ring.... not working

Hey, I need some help... Im trying to take a picture of my fiancee's engagement ring so parents/relatives who live far away can see it, but I just cant seem to get it to take right.

I have a Canon S30, just got it a few days ago and am trying to figure it out heh

1) What is the best lighting?
2) I tried using macro but it is still having trouble focusing on the ring

Best Picture I've gotten so far

Pull back to about 1.5-2 feet, then crop it in a photo program. S30 is 3 megapixel, you should still be able to get a good sized pic.

Or turn on that little flower mode, that helps with closer shots.

Yeah I had macro mode on, still no luck, Im going to play around and take a lot more pictures till I figure it out.

1.51 carats I believe is the official weight.

Get really good lighting, for high shutter speeds, for less blur. Just hold a lamp nearby...it isnt a pro studio type shot, so it'll work fine.

Use a tripod to prevent blur.

Use indirect lighting from a strong source. NO FLASH!!!

Place the ring on a sheet of white paper or other monochromatic surface that you think sets it off nicely.

The suggestion to go a bit farther away is good, you're gonna crop it anyway for the e-mail.

use plenty of light, maybe set up a slight elevation like a open book or something, throw a dark piece of matte black (no velvet like material) on top of it, shoot the picture, preferably maual focus

thanks guys tons of good suggestions

Since I know it can be done with my camera, I would like to do it with it 😱) since it has to come to some use or it was a waste of money ;o)
