Trying to slow down fans via SpeedFan

I just finished putting a new computer together today, and my 2 case fans are very loud. All I'm trying to do here is make them less noisy.

I have a DS3L mobo and I noticed that the default BIOS settings were set to automatically regulate the speed of the fans (a feature they call "smart fan"). To me, they seem like they're running at full speed all the time. I downloaded SpeedFan and started playing with it but it didn't seem like anything was changing. SpeedFan automatically detected the three fans in my case (2 case fans + 1 CPU fan). However, the interface in SpeedFan is very confusing - I've got Speed01, Speed02, and Speed03. I'm assuming that corresponds to Fan01, Fan02, and Fan03. But then I have Temp01, Temp02, Temp03, and each of the three Speed variables is under them. So I'm not exactly sure what all of that means. I played a lot with it (tried several different things) but it didn't really do anything. Heck, I set all fans to 10% and I didn't notice any change. Should I disable "smart fan" in the BIOS so that there's no conflict with what I'm doing with SpeedFan? I'm not that interested in changing the CPU fan right now because it isn't that loud - I just want to change my 2 case fans. Can anyone give me some insight?

your case fans are CHEAP Fans! Cheap fans can't spin down or may not even have the 3rd pin that's controls the speed and RPM readings. SpeedFan software may not be able to manipulate the default voltage putting it from bios either so no point in have that software taking up your windows memory.

where are your case fans connected to? onto the motherboard or directly to PSU? does it even have 3 pins?

Your smart fan control may be controlling your CPU fan only and you don't want it too low.
If you disable it all together, it runs at default max voltage so if the noise doesn't change anything, you can be sure that smart fan option vs. disabled = same voltage for your case fans. If you disable the smart fan options, your CPU fan may also run at default max voltage which in your case may be a little noiser.

Just disconnect those fans unless you need them absolutely and what kinda case? cheap case vs. anandtech case does make a difference. you can always replace them fans and buy a quieter ones, but be cautious of noise level rating on product spec. this time.

*1. i had 2 same exact fans that one made higher noise then other, i losen up the screws alittle and the noise went away..apprently it was warping the fan alittle.

2. I had another issue with 2 exact type of fans, one making more noise than the other, i reverse the airflow and the noise went away, apprently gravity doing some work on that fan and spinning reverse fix'd it*

Well I've got three different fan pins on my mobo. Two 4-pin connections and one 3-pin connection. The CPU is plugged into the 4-pin connection, as well as one of the case fans. The other case fan is plugged into the 3-pin connection. None of my fans are plugged into the PSU.

Not sure what any of that really means, though, as far as controlling their speed.

From another forum......
I use a fan controller on my DS3R so I can't really answer your question. However, I've worked on DS3L and speedfan can only control 2 of 4 fan connectors and those 2 are 4-pins connector type.

Disable Smart fan and try it?
