Trying to setup a dual boot Win2K/Me. Need some help

Well Win Me has been installed for a while now, i just picked up Win2K and want to install it now. My first question is, if i just upgrade from ME to 2K, will that keep all my orignal files in tact and everything, or will they be deleted? If I will lose them, then i would rather setup for a dual boot. How would I go about this. I tried to install it once and got a stop error, saying to check for viruses(which i doubt I have any, but I will check) reinstall any new hard drives or controllers, and one other thing i don't remember. But then i realized i prolly need to format the partition to NTFS or whatever it is, correct?

Also I have a 30.7GB hard drive that is divided into 3 parts. 1.about 15GB the other 2 are about 7.5GB each. Is there any way to make a few smaller parts. without losing data? Thanks in advance

To repartition without losing data, you are going to have to use a program like partition magic.

I've never really tried upgrading, it should keep all your files, but some programs might stop working, and you might have to reinstall them.

If I were you, I'd grab partition magic or a similar program and repartition, then install Win2K on the second drive.

I clean installed, and still dual booted because I was relatively new, WinME still comes in handy at times. I'd go the dual boot method until you feel comfortable with Win2K.

Win2K and WinMe dual boot well together.

Win2K supports the FAT & FAT32 file systems so there is no need to change the partition to NTFS. All you have to do is make sure that 2K and ME each have their own partition of the hard disk - as far as I know they can't be run from the same partition.

I believe that it is easier if you install ME first, and then install 2K since the Win2K installation is much more oriented toward accomodating dual boot users. After you get ME working, boot the 2K CD and when it asks for which partition to install 2K, just pick one that is different from the ME partion. After a successful 2K install, you should have the option of choosing which OS to run at boot.

You definetly want to install ME first for a dual boot situation. 2000 will detect the ME installation and will set up the boot loader for dual boot.

I explained it in my first post, while trying to install 2K I get a stop error(right after it first copies files and then restarts), it says to do a number of things like check for viruses, which I don't have any, and reinstall new hard drives and controllers, and something else I don't recall. How can i gte past this, whats causing it?

Mike, are you booting your system with the Win2K CD or are you trying to start the install from within WinME?
