trying to set up home network

i have two comps, and i want to put them on a little network just so i can get files from eachother... what i did was right clicked on my computer and put them on teh same work group... and i went through the wizard and selected that my comp and the other comp connect to the internet through a hub (i assumed thats the same as a router)....

one of my computers sees the other in my workgroup, but says i dont have access and i did the exact same with the other but it doesnt see the other one... help please

im running keiro personal firewall, so if that helps you with your diagnostics thanks

I will assume you are running Windows XP.

Right click the C drive and choose "Sharing and Security"
Select "share this folder" then name it something (computer1 Drive C for example)
Click ok
Repeat on the other machine (name the share computer2 Drive C)
Now you should see drive C under computer1's name while viewing from computer2 and vice versa when you explore "network places"

well the problem is A) one computer isnt seeing the other B) the one that is seeing the other, when i click that computer it gives me the error

\\computer2 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of teh server to find out if you have acceess permissions THe network path was not found

different login names... i dont have any passwords on my comps

XP home or PRO?

try this.....
right click my computer, choose map network drive, pick the drive letter you want to assign, underneath that type \\computer1name\whatever you called the share.

Example
Drive letter Z:
\\computer1\Drive C

If you don't get any error, a window should open with the contents of the other computers C drive.

says network path cant be found.... computer 2 still cant see computer 1, computer 1 can see computer 2 but it says i dont have permission to access it or whatever i typed above

Hmm, I bet Pro one sees the Home one, not the other way around?

I'm sorry I just don't have any more suggestions for you right now...have you tried rebooting both, sometimes it clears things up.

yeah i did the identical stuff for both machines
could my kiero fire wall be the problem? i set it to where it allows sharing, and put in both comps ip's

Go into network connections, and check that on both computers, CLIENT for MS NETWORKS is enabled, and that the properties say file/printer sharing etc.
Also, might want to check that any firewalls aren't running whilst you are offline from the internet, to see if that could be a problem.

Do you at anytime get a prompt for a password?

I had the same problem as you, and it was because I had passworded one of the nodes.

i unhooked the internet, turned off firewalls, still no go, i made sure those things were checked on both comps... i never get prompted for pass or anything

sometimes if you take a wrong step in the process the comps get confused.

An easy way to straighten them out sometimes is start over with a completely different workgroup name, and make sure its identicle for both. So for instance if they were mshome maybe change them to workgroup worthless or some such name

ps: it should not be necessary to map the drive for them to see each other.
xp is usually pretty easy to network compared to its predecessors.
