trying to set up a serial terminal to connect to an old mac

I've been posting in another thread trying to figure out how to install debian on an old Umax 200MHz PPC mac. you can see it here. thanks a lot to haden, with him I've determined that the Open Firmware is set to not use the monitor output or a keyboard. so, he said I should connect it to a serial terminal. I'm assuming if I could get the serial ports of the mac and some pc, I could run hyperterminal on the pc and use it to set the Open Firmware. first of all, the mac's ADB port is just like a serial port, right? so could I use a null modem cable with a serial to ADB adapter on one end to connect the two machines?

please post if you have any experience with any of the things I've mentioned
thanks
