Ok, I've been trying to send email to say domain "yyyyy.net" for the past few weeks. Everytime I try to send email to yyyyyy.net from my domain name it bounces on me. The error message is:

The original message was received at Mon, 7 Apr 2003 15:44:41 -0500 from user-
XXXXXXXX
----- The following addresses had permanent fatal errors ----- <xxxx@squishy.net>

----- Transcript of session follows ----- <xxxx@squishy.net>... Deferred: Name server: mail.xxxxx.net.: host name lookup failure Message could not be delivered for 5 days Message will be deleted from queue

I replaced the real domain name with X's but that is the idea.

I am able to send emails to that domain through hotmail, and I am able to receive emails from the domain yyyyy.net to both my hotmail and my own domain name.

I emailed my hosting company and they said it was yyyyy.net's DNS server company that is screwed up. But who's right, I feel like I'm really being jerked around by my provider. It doesn't make sense that everything works in every direction, except me sending emails to yyyyy.net and that being yyyyy.net's DNS server company. Wouldn't my company be responsible too?

do an nslookup from your computer for the domain in question. If that works, then your ISP at least has the info.

ok I did an nslookup and it sees the server and knows the address....but what does that mean. So I am guessing that means my ISP knows the server. But isn't it my domain hosting company that is the issue here. I am using Earthlink. So yes, earthlink sees the other domain name in question. But when I send mail, I am sending it through an SMTP server from my hosting company (Earthlink is my ISP, dixiesys is my domain hosting company). So it is Dixiesys that doesn't see squishy.net correct? What's up, I am confused.

OK, sounds like it is in your domain host's dns.
A short term fix is to use your ISP for outgoing mail. Use their server for smtp. It might take a while to sort the rest out.

Can anybody confirm this theory. I mean it makes sense to me, but whenever I post for help on dixiesys I get some response by somebody that it is not their problem, but the other domain's DNS server. Since I don't really understand that much about DNS servers and such, I'm not all that comfortable in making a call on this. But if people can give me more backup, or can confirm this theory then I'll be more comfortable in calling them up, or posting another help/complaint online.

The other oddity is that I can reach www.yyyy.net, the webpage for the previously mentioned domain name. So is it still possible that my DNS servers are screwed up? Because I know for a fact that the web server for that domain name is the same machine (and IP) as the mail server.
