Ok, I have two computers that have Quickbooks 2003 and Quickbooks point of sale running on them both. The server machine in the back is running an AMD 2.1 GHZ processor, 1Gig PC 2700 Ram, 60GB WD 7200 RPM , built in sound, video, and LAN on an ASUS A7n266 motherboard. This computer is running Windows XP Home

The Register computer up front has a AMD Duron 1.3GHz PRocessor 256MB Ram, 40GB HD 7200RPM, built in sound, video, and LAN on an ECS K7SEM. This machine is running Windows 2000 Professional

Now my problem is that the Quickbooks point of sale runs very very slow up front because it has to access the information from the QBPOS on the server. When I installed the QBPOS on the front computer alone, it ran very smooth. But it has something to do with having to access the info from the back. The server and the register computer are probably about 80ft. from each other. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this would run so slow? Thanks in advance for your help. If you need more info about the specs on the machines or about the situation just ask.

Hmm, how is everything all hooked up together? Any reason why you are using different operating systems because it might make things easier if you used the same one for both pcs.

I am using 2 diff operating systems because I do not have the cd for Win2K anymore and I can only use one copy of XP unless I go out and buy another one.

I am doing the same thing for a local company and it works fine,

10/100 Switches that all systems plug into.
All CAT5e cable, each machine is running windows 2000 pro-SP3 and the server is Windows 2000 Server-SP3.

They dont actually run the software from the server, they just access the data files form it, when i moved the app to the server and ran it that way, it was dog slow..too much trying to come off the server to the desktop, especiialy when more than one person was using it.

I opted to do a local install on the PC's then point them to the files on the server. This way I get backups and all is happy.

Do what saigonK said. I use this same setup for several different apps. running everyhting from the server seems to take to long, but if you set it to only access the data files remotely it should work faster

Here is the problem. This company is too cheap and doesnt want purchase seperate copies of QuickBooks. The can get away using the same license if the register computer installation is pointing to the server installation. This is all legal according to the Quickbooks license agreement. So installing a seperate copy on each machine may be the only solution though.

I'm 99% sure that isn't legal. I believe you have to have 1 copy per workstation regardless of how many QB data files you are using or accessing at one time.

BTW you can't access the same data file that somebody else has open unless the registration numbers are different

Well, freakin A. I feel like a complete idiot. The stupid hub was 10megabit instead of 100MB. Bought a new 10/100 hub and all is well.

And on a side note, it specifically says in the manual that there is a multi-user license agreement for a single copy of Quickbooks POS.

Thanks for all the help guys, it was much appreciated.

That is a good deal on the POS version, I know for our version we had to have each user with a licensed copy on their machine in order to run the data from the server but the app from their desktop.
