Trying to repair an XP install

I'm getting error messages when I click "My Documents" via the Start menu. Same thing w/notepad.
I put in my XP disc & rebooted, but I didn't get the option of "Repair". It showed the partition that XP was on & I had a choice to install or delete or create another partition.
Now what?

Personally I'd try to fix the error rather than do a repair install. What's the error, and have you googled the error to try to resolve it yourself?

After I click "My Documents", it opens & immediately I get a popup box from Windows Explorer stating "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem & needs to close. We are sorry for your inconvenience. If you were in the middle of something the information you were working on might be lost."

OK. An Explorer error makes me think of removing Explorer plug-ins like Divx, archive tools, etc. Anyway, what did Google say about the error? Any luck there?

I agree. Try to find a solution to the problem first before attempting a repair install. Do you have an OEM XP disc? Some OEMs XP discs do not have (allow) the repair option.

If you click on more info on the error message does it come up with a specific .dll? If you have a corupt .dll you can extract it from your XP cd or from dll-files.. Or as dclive stated it may be from a divx plug-in.

Or you may have a corrupt user id.

Or you it may be from a recent app you installed. System restore?

Or you may have picked up some malware. Try installing and running Ccleaner first. And then read and follow the instructions on John's website on adware, spyware, and trojan removal. Great site. I have used his rogue removal kit on several repairs.
