Trying to remember an old MMORPG

I've spent an hour googling and wikipedia-ing, and can't find it, so maybe it doesn't even exist, but if it does, maybe you guys know. I am trying to recall the name of a game that came out within a few years of EQ(no promises that even that is accurate), I didn't actually play the game so I can't provide much in details, what I remember is that the game's lore/backstory provided some kind of reason for why people stopped dying or resurrected.

Any ideas? I believe it was an MMORPG, not a game like Planetside.

I thought it might have been Asheron's Call or DAOC, but I can't find any details in their lore that match the lore explanation for no death/resurrection.

If I recall Asheron's Call was the first MMO heavily hyped to dethrone EQ in the early days of MMO.

I don't know anything about whether it was supposed to dethrone EQ, I'm just trying to find out if there really was a game that had some lore explanation for why everyone was suddenly immortal/respawning.

Well by that I mean it was the first major MMO since EQ, so highly likely that it's the one if it was within a few years of EQ.

Could use more hints. There are only so many - Meridian 59 is a long forgotten MMORPG from before EQ.

Sounds like Asheron's call.

Used to play that thing non stop in the 7th grade (13 years ago)

2 weeks ago I did a free trial of it just to see it again after all these years... I can still remember the location of most of the portals, towns and monsters in relation to said towns. lol
