Trying to remember a sci-fi mini series (aired on tv) (found!)

I'm trying to remember the name of a science fiction tv mini series (I think it was aired on nbc but I'm not 100% certain) that may have been replayed later on the sci-fi channel.

The basis behind the show was that earth dying or something and the human race made a crew up of children (teens or younger), who would be able to survive a long space flight to some location where they would find the key to saving the rest of the human race.

Their ship was unarmed but they managed to make a workng rail-gun in order to fight off another enemy ship at one point. I want to say there was some prominent younger tv stars of the day starring in this but imdb searches on some people that came to mind, brought nothing.

Sounds like Earth 2, but I don't think that's what you're talking about because I don't remember the rail gun part. Earth 2 wasn't a mini series though, it was supposed to be a regular show but was canceled. Which sucked because I loved that show!

Earth star voyager is it i believe, wow i didn't think it was that old(1988??).
I suppose I still could have been home when i saw it first.

Now to figure out where i can get a copy.
