When I quit for a week with the patch I didn't have any cravings, just the nagging feeling I forgot to do something. Are you using the correct patch or one of the later week ones? Also, did you start using the patch in the middle of the day or when you first woke up? Don't know if that would make much difference, but it might.

BTW, do not smoke when using the patch, the results can be fatal.

I quit mid december with the patch. Sucks!!!

I've cheated a few times. Just go right back and throw them away and you'll make it!!!

And I am craving a cig soooo bad, I put a nicoderm patch on at noon its now 10 and im strugglin hard. Can I slap another one on, I wonder if that would make the craving go away?

Nope, the patches help a little, but it's a matter of willpower, not chemistry. If you want to quit badly enough you'll make it, if you're weak all the patches in the world won't help. 10 hours down, the hard part will only last another 11 months, 30 days and 14 hours.

first 3 days are the hardest if i recall correctly (i quit smoking about 10 yrs ago, it took about 4 tries, quit start up etc. but for good 10 yrs ago.

after the first 3 days, the habitual part of it is reduced.

it's tough but considering your medical news from other thread, i'd take it to heart and quit for good.

I quit 2.5 years ago. I tried every patch/gum/trick in the book. I tried to quit atleast 2 dozen times, lasting 4 days at the most. But what worked for me? Pure motivation. Daughter was due in 2 more months. and I didnt want to be a smoker when she came into this god forsaken world. I used to smoke 1 1/2 packs a day at a min and I just took my pack of cigs, crumpled them up and threw out. Havent had one since. So like others have stated, its all about attitude and mentality.

Good Luck.

Dude, I JUST quit. No joke. Been two weeks now, and it hasn't been that bad. I promise you, it all starts with the mentality. Convince yourself that you DO want to quit, and then after that....I'll almost say that it's *easy.*

Stick with it man!

The two hardest times for me, are still: When I go out (bar/club) and am drinking, OR at work. (Work third shift through the night.)

But I've been hanging in there. All of my friends are soo impressed, because I've been smoking for like 5-6 years.

Do it, do it, do it!!!!! I swear, after one week, you'll be soo happy with yourself.

2 weeks. 🙂

good job, but it's not that easy, i quit 10 yrs ago, but it took me about 4 restarts and it wasn't like i started up the next day, i'd gone as long as 6 months without cigs and then started up again. it might seem easy right now because you are in the euphoria of feelings of accomplishment, but say you get hit with something real hard and you are a little depressed, your first inclination will be to reach for the cigs.

don't try and make it sound any easier than it is, it is very very hard.

i've been off cigs for 10 yrs, haven't touched a one and i still get the cravings occassionally.

I have been w/o a cig for 15 hours so far.
Doc would not prescribe the patch, so I stopped Cold turkey

and it's been extremely easy.

All I need was the right motivation and I got that yesterday at the doctor office.

Doctor saids that I have hardened arteries around my heart, I have been having chest and upper mid-back pain. I had a battery of tests yesterday and will conduct a 5 hours stree test tomorrow.

Basically Heart Disease is upon me.

Now that I am motivated with the realization that there may just be something to those Surgean General Warnings, it has made it much easier for me.

I am 36, have a 10 month old daughter and beautiful wife. Suddenly a cigerette means a lot less than it use to mean.

Just had lunch today, and would have loved a cig but you could not have paid me $1000 to smoke one.

This is how dumb my college roommate was.

He was going to quit...bought the patch...decided if he wore the patch, but took it off while he smoked, it was ok and helping him cut down.

I quit the week before Thanksgiving '02 and haven't had one since. I mainly attribute my success to the following things:
1) Using Nicorette gum (the 4mg, not 2mg)
2) Not telling anyone for the first week of quitting (so I wouldn't disappoint myself or anyone else)
3) At the time, I was temporarily working on a different campus and wouldn't have my smoking buddies around to tempt me
4) A good friend who had expressed concern about my smoking and who (no joke, despite the urge for eye-rolling) inspired me to keep with it everytime I was tempted to light up (said friend later became my sweetie, but that's beside the point)

In the end, I'd quit using the gum about a month ahead of schedule (was totally nicotine free by Jan 15, '03 instead of ~Feb 15) and have been able to go to bars, clubs, etc. without much of a problem.

The only times I have the craving now are when my temper flares up or when I'm a little bit in the cups and typically then, it's a nic fit, not the urge to have an actual cig. The thought of the taste alone is gross.

Good luck on quitting!

I quit before Christmas, and I will tell you, it is all in your head. I have been a smoker for 14 years, I have "stopped" 3 times. Cinamon gum is all you need! The first 3 days are the worst. I will not smoke again! My daughter, and my life are more important to me than a cig. When your 11 year old ask's you to stop, it is time to quit!!

Your large intestine could probably absorb nicotine pretty well, and you probably aren't technically "smoking"....

GO FOR IT.

he has a point.. or you could just light one up... it's just one cig whats the harm in that?

if you light another cig up ever again, I will personally invite the goatse man to do a photo shoot in your living room.

#1 Rule Don't have any cigs anywhere you can reach them!
#2 Don't be around smokers! This will make it 1,000,000 times harder to not cheat.
# avoid drinking since we all know that being drunk makes it harder to hold back from doing things you shouldn't.

You can do it, its been just over 8 months for me.
