Noob question, but it it possible to hit a higher resolution than the monitor supports using nvidia control panel? My monitors max is 1280x1024 but I was farting around and tried an unsupported res like 16x12 and it actually worked. Problem is that only portions of windows desktop are visible (I can scroll the cursor around to see the other parts). Also cant get a game to run (get error msg and it defaults to lower res). Is there a way to resize windows and make it fit so the 16x12 can fit on my screen and perhaps run a game? Dont know enough about those advanced timing terms to fiddle with it.

no i dont think there is a way

specially on a LCD. @ 1280x1024 you have 1280 physical pixels by 1024 physical pixels. by trying to run higher res your asking ther pixels to split in 2 or something. a pixel cant display red on one half and white on the other, i think its the same with CRT's the phosphor thingy that actually emits the colors (after the electron beam hits them) are a set size. the smaller these are the higher the res (if area is kept the same)

Hmm,

Why is it that I "can" display 16x12 on my desktop. Am I nvidias scaling of 16x12?

again the res is visible and no errors or blue screen - just cant see all of the windows desktop at once and cant run a game in that res

One would think that if it was not possible my monitor would blue screen and default back to a lower res when I tried 16x12.

thanks for the input

yeah you can do that, but like you said you gotta pan round to see the rest of the screen. your still only seeing 1280x1024 pixels at any one time.

OP: You're going to need to get a new monitor if you want to have a resolution higher than your supported max that will actually fill the entire screen. Such is life.

Even if you did get it to somehow display 16x12 and scale down to 12x10, you're still only seeing 12x10, making it completely pointless.

ok

Makes sense. I appreciate the feedback. Now if I can only find a 27-30" monitor that does that res with a good IQ and respose time I would be happy.
