Trying to play old games

I'm trying to play some of the games that sapped my childhood of hours behind the pc, most notably the Bard's Tale (original one). I found and installed it on my pc, and I can run the game, but it plays full screen. Might not be so bad if it wasn't developed when 640x480 was the norm and my LCD is at 1280 x 1024. Are there ways to play these old games in a window so they look nicer? I've tried right clicking on the shortcut, but I don't get the normal options (because it's DOS based I assume) and the options I've tried don't seem to do anything. I've also tried downgrading my screen resolution, but that doesn't seem to do it either, it still looks the same. Any ideas?

You need to "right click" the actual executable, not the shortcut. You'll get different options with the shortcut. If you "right click" on an actual DOS executable you should see something similiar to this: DOS Executable

i checked out Jagged alliance 2 last night and man that is old

i can't believe these download places like steam still want $20 for it.

DOSBox.

It runs Daggerfall quite nicely on my Linux box - too bad it requires an entire core of an Opteron 165 to do so.

Still an excellent game though if you don't mind the low-res graphics.

The free Urban Chaos total conversion for JA2 is also a lot of fun. New maps, weapons and characters.

I did get that menu of items, so I guess I was clicking on the .exe, not the shortcut. Those are the options that I had tried but didn't work.

I tried DOSbox and it worked perfectly, putting it in a window and showing the graphics a lot crisper than they were. Thanks for the tip! I think I'm going to have to try out a few of the other games mentioned in here too.
