Trying to open ports, not working

I'm not new to port forwarding, I have done it in the past and been successful. I've moved to a new place and since then haven't been able to forward any ports. I've done everything the same way I did it before but with no luck.

I live in an apartment building and I've heard that there can be a second router in the building that I can't access. I figured that that was the issue, but I just followed the phone line out of the house and it goes directly from my modem to a bell box hanging on the outside wall.

When I access my router status page it says that it's internet IP is 192.168.1.64.

I've checked the ports using PFPortChecker and it says that they are not open.

The reason I want to open these ports is because my Xbox 360 says that my NAT is "strict" and I think it may be the cause of some of my problems playing online.

Am I SOL?

Do you have a modem supplied by your ISP? If you're router's IP is 192.168.1.64, then you probably do, and the modem is probably ALSO a router, which is probably 192.168.1.1

Go to address 192.168.1.1 and see what happens, chances are the modem/routers interface will appear. You will need a login, probably admin/admin, but if that doesn't work then good the modem model + default login and see what comes up.

Like I told this person http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2231279 most DSL ISP's will provide you with a modem/router combo. Seems to be the case in your situation since you router is showing an Internet IP of 192.168.1.64. You need to access your modem/router combo and port forward in that device and then turn your WiFi Router into an Access Point and turn off DHCP Server. I don't think it is possible to port forward through 2 routers, I might be wrong. What model modem do you have?

I should probably mention that my ISP is Teksavvy. They supplied the modem, which is a Speedtouch 516. Going to 192.168.1.1 doesn't do anything.

On your PC, you running Windows? what is your ip? (ipconfig /all)

speedtouch 516, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SpeedTouch

you can port forward through both, you just need to make sure all your ip's are in order.

So you can successfully get to 192.168.1.64? Is this what your setup looks like:

Speedtouch ---> Router ----> Xbox

If so, What is the complete WAN config on the router?

Yes, Windows 7. I had my pc set to a static IP of 192.168.0.111, and my xbox was 192.168.0.125.

Yes, that's how it is setup, speedtouch -> router -> pc/xbox

I can't get access to the speedtouch's settings, I even got rid of the router and directly connected my pc to the modem but nothing worked.

What's the Default Gateway for the router's WAN?

For the xbox, just enabling UPnP was enough for my setup. Without UPnP enabled, mine was always "strict". Chances are the modem's UPnP setting is disabled. So you gotta get to that modem I would imagine..

Speedtouch = 192.168.1.x network
Behind Router (pc/xbox) = 192.168.0.x network

In the router's WAN config, under 192.168.1.64, what does the Default Gateway say?

and also enable UPnP on the router...

Oh wow, I didn't know you could do that.

It says that UPnP is enabled.

edit: should I just go ahead and setup my router as an access point? It seems like that would make things easier.

Make sure it's enabled on your router as well.

Ya, it's enabled on both.

I can't find any option for port forwarding in the speedtouch's settings edit:nvm, found it i think

I would keep poking around in there, according to the link i posted, that modem has NAT and a firewall. Port forwarding is probably in there somewhere. I have also found that the Xbox doesn't always work well with a static IP. I have to use DHCP to get it out of "moderate" mode into "open" mode....just another thought.

Also, ensure your router is at the latest firmware, UPnP can be finicky. I've had good luck so far with DHCP and UPnP enabled to get the Xbox260 into "open"

In the end, if it's not cooperating also another option:

does the modem have a DMZ zone? if so, put your router on the dmz, that will allow all ports to flow to your router, then you can use the router to forward only the ports you want.

Another option, if you only have those two wired devices, a switch(instead of the router) may work better for your setup and could make the Xbox operate in "open" mode instead of strict.

I found it, it was just in a confusing spot for someone with my networking understanding.

So should I just set up my router as an access point? Would this prevent further headaches when trying to configure my network?

If you want to forward the ports, it's like this

Modem: forward the ports to the router's WAN IP, 192.168.1.64

Router: forward the same ports to the Xbox360 IP

Like I said though, my 360 doesn't play well with a static IP..

Indeed, another possibility. You may have to reconfig the pc and xbox IP's...

Yes, you will have to change the static ip of your PC and Xbox to match the IP range of your SpeedTouch.

If you really wanted to you could put your SpeedTouch into Bridge Mode. This would turn off the Router feature and turning the SpeedTouch into just a modem sending your Internet IP directly to your WiFi Router.

Ok I went ahead an set up the router as an access point and it's running fine but I still can't open any ports.

Ok, now that you set it up as an access point you need to also turn off the DHCP Server and you need to change your routers IP to match your your SpeedTouch IP range. Which router do you have? https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 go to this website to see which ports are open. Did you also set exception in windows firewall for your PC?

DHCP is off on my router, it has an IP address of 192.168.1.50. It's a Linksys WRT160N.

Windows firewall is off.

I don't really know what to do at the page you linked me to. I've been using PFPortChecker and it keeps telling me the ports are closed.
