Hi, I'm having trouble making the background of image completely transparent to use as my avatar using Gimp 2.

I've been reading all the guides and have been trying to do this for weeks but keep on giving up.

I know it's a bit of a long shot but can anyone help me out please.

Thanks

Depending on how complex it is you can just make a new image with a transparent background (It's an option during creation iirc) and just paste it in there.

use png format. The white shows up because you are using gif or jpeg.

Negative. Gif does transparency too. I'm guessing when you make something an avatar it automatically converts it to jpeg or gif and he's losing transparency in the process.

Could you fill in the white area of the image with the same RGB color of the background?

That would do it. But people use different color schemes so it would only work for whichever one you use.

KeithP, I might give that a try, cheers.

I tried someone else's transparent png image from another forum on Anandtech and it doesn't work here.

But I do appreciate all your help guys.

Thanks

It's because it gets converted automatically. I'm assuming you aren't bothering to edit the image first to fit the requirements of avatars before using them.

No I didn't think of that. So if I set it at say 80x80 pixels or 19.5kB (that seems to be the maximum size of images on Anandtech) it should be OK?

thanks, you're a star!

edit: thanks malak I changed the size of the image and it works!!
