Trying to learn Chinese, whats the best way?

I took a course UCLA in chinese, but all the test/quizzes were on the writing, so I had to spend all my time learning to write the characters. I am interested in mainly learning conversational manderin chinese and possibly reading traditional chinese.

I have some home stuff, such as rosetta stone, but its hard to really learn on my own.

anyone know the best way to find classes or any suggestions?

Go to China, get arrested and thrown in Chinese prision. You should learn the language pretty quick!

Suggest going to the downtown library or your universisty library and checking out their foreign language learning section. You could also look into paying a university student who knows Chinese to tutor you...probably cheaper than taking a class.

I read about this woman who lived in Chinatwon in NYC to learn Cantonese and another dialect.

Is there a "Chinatown" in Los Angeles?

Edit: I changed Mandurin to Cantonese.

Yes there is.

You can enroll yourself in those Chinese schools that chinese families put their little kids into. I went through that for a few years and they taught me how to read, write, and speak. Too bad I forgot it all.

I was thinking the same thing.

When I got thrown into a Turkish prision back in the day, I was well versed in turk in no time.
However after getting out, PTSD set in, now I forgot everything.

Just do what I did - marry a overseas Taiwanese lady. Not only do I have a personal translator but also someone who knows how to read the Chinese menu in a restaurant.

It worked for me!

That's interesting, as far as I know most of the Chinese speakers in Chinatown speak Cantonese.

translation from google is much better: whites fail to understand
