I am entertaining the thought of attempting my first build & so far have been given plenty of encouragement. Not a gamer(yet anyway) so was wondering if 8600GT would be sufficient for viewing and editing movies and photos?

8600GT would be sufficient but if that is all you are doing then you might aswell save some $ and get a 3450 for $19 AR- which will be more than enough.
 
Ask when you are ready to build as video card prices are dropping so that you may be able to get a much more powerful card for $50-60 when you are ready to build.
