I've been using this guide...for 'jaunty' I really wasn't sure what to use...I assume 'karmic' is correct, as I'm still a newb.

I have gotten xbmc to show up in the synaptic package manager but I get errors when i try to install. It says that some repositories aren't gonna install so it cancels the installation.

Karmic is still in beta, you'll likely have to wait until they update the packages for Karmic (whenever it comes out).

At the moment, 9.04 is the latest Ubuntu supported by XBMC. It seems like they'll roll out the Karmic Koala release sometime in November, however.
You could also get the SVN and compile XBMC from source, and then it should work.
