Trying to install Windows and having problems

I'm having trouble installing windows again, it said Windows needed to repair so i did that and when it was copying files it got to 49% and just turned off. Then i was just installing a fresh copy and did the same thing at about 40 - 50 % and just turned off, and i don't know why
Its a laptop. Dell 2.4 P4 256 Mb

Can anyone help, it just did it again at like 39% I'm in the windows install, its copying the files and just shuts off.

I don't mean to sound unsympathetic, but your post belongs in the Technical Support forum (or Operating Systems), not General Hardware.

BTW, are you using the original Windows CD that came with the laptop? You have to use the original Dell CD only with Dells, if I'm not mistaken.

(Don't answer that question here -- re-post in the Tech Support forum and let the chaps there help you out.) 🙂

No you don't, i used a Windows Xp Pro before and now i'm using it again, well I didn't care where it went because this is a big issue and wasn't concerned where it went, thanks for nothing.

No need to get snippy. I was honestly trying to help you. You are more likely to get fast, accurate help in the Tech Support forum. There are a few guys that hang out there that are brilliant. But be defensive and act like a child if you must.

And you should have cared where your post went. There are specific forums here for a reason. Your question has nothing whatsoever to do with "general hardware." Grow up.

There may be at least two reasons why the installation stops. First it could be the CPU is overheating or the HDD has corrupted FAT table. You need to "zero" the hdd first so the FAT can be rewritten. Then upon installation do a partitioning and a full format. While installing make sure the laptop is place in a cool place or at least direct a fan to the unit (although this is not a guarantee).
