I created a bootable usb drive using rufus that has windows 7 on it but when I try and double click setup i get an error code:

Windows Setup cannot find a location to store temporary installation files. TO Install windows, make sure that a partition on your boot disc has at least ~700 megabytes of free space.

Error code: 0x80070490

I have 2 hard drives on the laptop and both have plenty of space

Are you trying to do a clean installation on a blank drive? If not, try that. If there are Windows 8 components on the drive, it could "confuse" the installer.

Try removing the second drive, and be sure the installation drive is connected to the first SATA port and designated as the first boot drive under boot options. That will give Windows has only the default target drive for the installation.

If you don't know which is the first port, boot to the CMOS. It will tell you which port it's on. They may be designated IDE 0 and IDE 1 or IDE 1 and IDE 2.

Before you start, make sure you have downloaded all the Windows 7 drivers for the various hardware components in your machine.

For more ideas, follow some of these returns from searching Google for "Error code: 0x80070490" (in quotes).

Good luck. :)

I'm installing from the desktop, i just double click the the setup.exe from the usb drive. I don't know how to select where it tries to install windows on, I thought that was done later on in the menu's after i click the setup.exe but it won't let me get that far. I don't think im going to open up my laptop and change the SATA cables so that leaves me with first boot drives under options, which I have no idea how to do on windows 8.

I don't think it will let me boot from USB, I tried going into bios and selecting it but nothing happened.
Don't you guys hate Windows 8, it's like they are forcing you to get used to the tablet big button home screen so that will entice you to buy their phones and tablets with similar operating systems.

Are you trying to install Windows 7 AND Windows 8 (i.e. leave 8 but also have 7 available)? If not, then you need to boot from the Windows 7 install DVD, format the hard drive, then install Windows 7.

my laptop doesn't have a dvd tray, I have to install using a usb stick. I want to install windows 7 fresh and get rid of everything else my laptop came with, meaning I want to get rid of windows 8. I'll download the drivers online. I can't get my laptop that came with windows 8 to recognize my usb stick that has windows 7 on it as a bootable usb stick during bootup mostly because windows 8 doesn't have the automatic bios screen anymore. When i try to access the bios manually i try to click boot from usb drive but that does nothing.

Turn off secure boot in the BIOS

i don't see that option anywhere, Im not sure I'm even looking at the bios screen in windows 8

UEFI Firmware settings I can select and then I get to a pretty poor "BIOS" screen that doesn't look like much

It says: boot menu App menu

If i press enter on anything the computer boots up again

update: got into what looks like bios, but dont see a "secure boot" anywhere

update2: I see "secure boot mode" option and it is set to standard, however it is grayed out and won't let me select it or change it

Members can help you much better if you would post the manufacturer and model number of the laptop you're referring to. That way we can take a look at the user or service manual and figure out what you need to do in order to disable the secure boot setting in the UEFI/BIOS setup utility. Until secure boot's disabled, you won't be installing anything.

Secure boot can be turned off in the setup interface somewhere. if it indeed cannot, you should be return and replace the laptop on their dime, after a little cajoling (being able to turn it off is required for an x86 implementation). It will be in the Security section, if it's like their Thinkpads.

Googling, it appears some users have had to set up an admin password for their BIOS to be able to disable secure boot.

Try using the Microsoft USB/DVD Tool to get the OS installer on the USB stick. Then, you should be able to boot the installer from USB just like from a DVD. You might need to delete all partitions, even so (I'm not sure why you sometimes do, but sometimes don't, TBH).

I have read that if you remove the drive(s) in the laptop, it may then allow you to make changes to the "secure boot" option.

Required but won't be enough since there is no secure option to disable(if there isn't) you will have to copy the uefi boot files on there as well, here is a step by step guide.

http://www.hodgin.ca/2012/10/02/creating-a-uefibios-windows-7-usb-and-installing-to-gpt-partitions/

steps 1-13 is covered by the program I used to create a bootable usb drive

step 14 "Once this is done you will need to get a copy of the EFI boot manager firmware file from a computer that has windows 64 bit installed on a UEFI system."

I don't think I have a UEFI system, so I can't get this file

I am hesitant to open up a brand new laptop and remove drives

It should just be an access panel on the side of the laptop with a single screw, if it's like other lenovo laptops. Should be marked with a little cylinder icon.

The hard drive is literally one of the few parts on a laptop you can swap/remove without voiding the warranty, and laptops made in the past 10ish years are mostly designed with easy access to the HD compartment in mind.

For a Lenovo laptop, press the "Blue" button at first screen, then F12 for boot options. Have your USB module inserted and ready to go.

i see a power button which lights up "blue", i press that computer goes into sleep mode. press f12 nothing happens.

a google search of "lenovo blue button" doesn't yield much, nor tell me where this button is, user guide doesn't mention blue button either

What happens when you press the Novo button, shown on page 20 of the PDF you linked? From pics I could find, it looks to be the same silver as the rest of the chassis.

Alright, I got to the bios screen, enabled legacy boot and am now at the windows 7 install screen. However a new problem arose:

"windows cannot be installed to this disk. the select disk is of the gpt partition style"

I've tried every drive and I've tried formatting the drives and deleting them to no avail. The google solutions are above my head right now.

update: formatted and deleted all my drives, seems like its working now

I have a Toshiba Satellite C50 running Win 8 which I hate and am trying to get back to Win7 but it won't let me install Win 7.

I've tried it from a USB stick, ISO file and from a DVD. When the drive was partitioned it just said there was an error installing and to restart the installation. When the drive isn't partitioned it says there's not enough space for the temp files.

The secure bit in bios is set as disabled.

I'm at a complete loss so any help is much appreciated.
