Trying to install Windows 7 on a PIII Machine...

I know its way below the requirements but I can't even get the setup.exe to run. When I double click it, it does nothing. Also when I try and boot up from dvd drive it doesn't work either. It searches the cd with a dash in the top left corner flashing for a few seconds and then says "No boot devices were found system halted".

I figured it would at least get me to the install portion and then tell me its incompatible. Windows XP CD loads up right away.

You need to install a DVD drive into the machine in order to read the Win7 install DVD.

don't listen to them. It is possible -- just did this with my Sony Vaio laptop with a PIII processor. It also has a DVD drive, but the laptop originally came with a CD drive and I think the bios only supports booting a CD instead of DVD even though a DVD drive is installed.

This is what I did:
1. used PLoP Boot Manager from here: http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager.html and installed the program onto a floppy
2. make a bootable Win7 installation flash drive using these instructions: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7vista-from-usb-drive-detailed-100-working-guide/
3. boot your machine from the floppy. It immediately gives you options to install from -- select bootable USB flash drive you made and you should be able to install Win7 normally.

This method should work for any machine, even those that don't have a DVD drive. Just need a floppy drive and USB port.

If your computer supports booting from a flash drive (my laptop didn't), then you could just do step 2.

Enjoy Win 7! Works great on my laptop.

What's the specs on that system AMDemALL?
Looks like you don't have enough Ram. I've run across problems like that where I did not pay attention to the minimum RAM requirments. Win7 may not be the best thing to try on that system.
Ever consider trying one of the many Linux distributions?

The system is 866mhz, 384mb ram, geforce 2 gts video, 100gb hard drive. Pretty sure it would run like complete ass on that amount of ram.

Its not my pc its a customers and they wanted Win7 on it. I should have asked the specs before I took it... I just figured it would be good enough haha. Talked to them today and im just going to remove the virus infested Windows XP and do a fresh install.

I installed W7 on an 2500+ Barton system with 1GB of RAM just for grins and it installed and ran real zippy.

Is this a burned disk? Try another burn. I just ran into this over the past weekend. The drive would not read the disk. Same thing with flashing cursor and/or no boot devices found. Different disk and voilà!

People are asking if you're dealing with a DVD drive because your post says CD ROM.

IMO, you've got a bad burn or a drive that won't read that burn.

Your RAM amount might be the culprit. The Windows 7 installer will only run on systems with 512 MB or more. However, there is a workaround that, but requires some hex editing. More instructions here: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/20967-install-windows-7-computer-less-than-512mb-ram.html

Still, even if you do get it installed, Windows 7 will perform very slowly with only 384 MB RAM and 866 MHz.
