Trying to Install New HDD W/ ATA Controller Card: Need Help

Hi,

I just installed a new Maxtor hdd with a ATA controller card and I'm having a few problems.

First of all, I'm pretty sure that I set the BIOS correctly. I set the main bootup drive to scsi because I have my one and only hdd hooked up to the controller card and I was told that I should set it to scsi because the card is set up like a scsi.

I think everything is fine this way because I have cd rom support and the cd rom is hooked up to the same controller card. I have nothing on my mobo IDE channels at all.

My problem is that for some reason Windows was not recognizing the drive, so I tried fdisking it. I probably shouldn't have done this because I know about as much about fdisking a drive as I do about setting the BIOS.

When I used fdisk I remember setting up a DOS partition and set it up for the whole drive. My problem is that now my machine boots up to a certain point and then says "Operating system not installed" or something like that. When the computer gets to that point, I don't know how to get out of it. I'm suspecting that I should remove that DOS partition, but I'm not sure how to get back into fdisk without a DOS prompt.

Can anyone help me out here? PM if possible? If not, could you give me a few links that might be helpful in my situation. I really shouldn't be messing with the BIOS or using the fdisk command because I really don't know what I'm doing. I guess I have to learn sometime though. 😉

Thanks so much,

Sal

How did you actually Fdisk it?
With a boot disk?
Just boot from the boot disk again.
Do you have a Windows boot disk? What version?
I hope there wasn't anything on the new disk.

Why don't you try using the MaxBlast utility?
It's less painful on a regular install.
I haven't used it with an ATA controller card.
It lets you just use the mouse and you don't have to mess
with "nasty" command lines.

at a DOS prompt, I just entered fdisk and it asked me if I wanted to set up a partition.

Yes. With a Win98SE Boot disk (floppy). The problem is that I keep restarting the machine with the bootup disk and it doesn't want to boot into anything. It just gets to a certain point and says that the Operating system is not installed and I can't do anything with it.

Win98SE. Yes, I have it, but it isn't doing anything at this point.

Anything on the new HDD or boot up disk (floppy)? Nothing on either of them. The hdd was empty and the floppy only contained what was put on there by the Windows 98SE utility for the bootup disk.

I had called Maxtor last week for something and they told me that the Maxblast utility doesn't like the controller card for some reason, so I didn't use it. I guess I should call them back, but I don't know if they will help me get out of this fdisk thing. I think I should at least get out of this (no operating system installed) before I call them. I don't know. Do you think I should call them anyway?

Thanks again!

Never mind on this problem. I have this one fixed, but have another. Will be posting a new topic. Thanks!
