Trying to install an Epson Perfection 636U scanner's twain driver - Win98se

I have an old gateway - bought a new HD and installed Win98se...

I have an Epson Perfection 636U Scanner. I've installed everything on the system successfully except for the scanner. I downloaded the latest drivers from Epson's website (twain driver and Epson Scanner software), and Added the "Scanners & Cameras" control panel.

Win98 detects the scanner and asks for a driver. I lead it to where I extracted the twain driver I downloaded and select the inf file...on the next screen, there is nothing displayed and the Next button is greyed out! WTF?!

Option2 - opened Scanners and Cameras control panel and clicked Add->Have Disk->selected the inf file...his time, again nothing is displayed in he window, but the Next button is not greyed. Clicking Next does nothing...

Highly confused here. The scanner was working fine before I installed the new HD and OS. No conflicts are anywhere.

Would appreciate any help possible...

I had a similar problem when I first installed Windows 2000 Professional on my new system. The video card would install fine and the software, but my Sound Blaster Audigy and Ethernet card would not install even though I had the latest drivers and everything. It would just say an error occured in installation. Eventually I just did a clean install of Windows 2000 Professional again.

So no one has had this problem? What the...?

Again - this is the screen just after choosing an .inf when installing the twain driver. There is nothing available in the box so it won't install...

OK - here's another question. The driver for a scanner that appears in Device Manager / "Scanners & Cameras" control panel...is that the twain driver? Am I trying to install the wrong driver here or what?

There's an updated USB driver from MS that's also required. Check here for Win98SE updates: http://www.3dspotlight.com/tweaks/updates/, or else MS Windows Updates site.
Try starting the computer with the scanner powered off. Right-click on the .inf file and select "install". Power on scanner and select the .inf file to install the twain driver.

thx!

ok - which update were you thinking of cause I didnt see any in the Win98 se list that reflected anything about USB devices.

I had remembered trying to right click the inf and choose install, but it gives an error message - something like "the device this driver is for is not working properly" or something like that. I don't think I tried it in the exact order you had mentioned - rather, when I right-clicked the inf the scanner was usually already on...I guess that might make a difference?

thx tho - I'll retry. Any more info would be appreciated.

ok - when i follow your instructions precisely - i.e. computer and scanner are both off, then i turn on the computer. the next step you mention is to right click the inf and choose install, again, the scanner has not been turned on. i get the error message:

"A device attached to this system is not found..."

which USB update did you mention needs to be installed? i've installed all important updates from windowsupdate.com

What motherboard & chipset? Try any chipset updates, found at the bottom of the 3dspotlight page.
At the same instant you click "install" for the .inf file, power on the scanner.
