Trying to help a friend with a logic puzzle for a class

4 men and 4 women were shipwrecked on a desert island. Eventually each person falls in love with one other person, and is in turn loved by one person. John falls in love with a woman who is, unfortunately, in love with Jim. Arthur loves a woman who loves the man who loves Ellen. Mary is loved by the man who is loved by the woman who is loved by Bruce. Gloria hates Bruce and is hated by the man whom Hazel loves. Who loves Arthur?

I started with trying to use the typical 4x4 grid, but it doesn't work because of the love AND hate stipulation.

Mapping it out so far:

John loves ___ loves Jim

Arthur loves ___ loves ___ loves Ellen

Bruce loves ___ loves ___ loves Mary

Hazel loves ___ hates Gloria hates Bruce.

So:

Arthur doesn't love Ellen.
Bruce doesn't love Mary.
Gloria doesn't love Bruce.

Assumption: No one loves the same sex or themselves.

Any tips?

you need a grid that is 8 high, 8 wide, but missing the bottom right quadrant, iirc

Just did some googling, found the answer. It seems to be a plug and chug with the associations I listed. No real scientific way, unless ElFenix's method works.

Edit:

Answer is Ellen loves John who loves Mary who loves Jim who loves Gloria who loves Arthur who loves Helen who loves Bruce who loves Ellen

New problem:

John is the same relation to Joe as Rick is to Joe?s son. Rick is the same relation to John as Joe is to Rick. What is the relation of John to Joe?

John ---> Joe
=
Rick ---> [Joe's son]

Rick ---> John
=
Joe ---> Rick

Tried so far: John and Joe brothers doesn't work. Hell, I can't use anything really.

JOhn is Joe's grandfather. Rick is Joe's son's grandfather.

John (father of ) Rick (Father of) Joe (Father of ) Joe's son.

Rick is John's son, Joe is rick's son.

John is Joe's brother, so Rick is Joe's sons brother. Therefore, Joe is Rick's father, making Rick Johns father. Someone check that for me, sleeping pills kicking in, trying to get her some tips before I hit the sack.

Do both of ours work? I agree that yours works, can't see the fault with mine.

Edit:

Mine definately doesn't work. Rick can't be John's father and John's nephew, doesn't pan out very well 😛

Marky got with Sharon
And Sharon got Sharice
She was sharing Sharon's outlook
On the topic of disease
Mikey had a facial scar
And Bobby was a racist
They were all in love with dyin'
They were doing it in Texas
Tommy played piano
Like a kid out in the rain
Then he lost his leg in Dallas
He was dancing with a train
They were all in love with dyin'
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain

Ironically, I started a thread with those lyrics about 2 weeks ago. It turned out to be a repost (though waaaaay) old.

I double-checked, this is the correct solution.
