My friend recently purchased components to build his first computer, and I said that I would help him. Unfortunately, we have run into a problem that I cannot solve. Here are the involved components:

Brand New MSI K7T Pro Motherboard
Brand New Duron 800mhz
Brand new Crucial pc133 cas3 memory
Brand New Geforce 2 GTS

Now onto the problem. Whenever we boot up for the first time, we hear a beep every 2 or three seconds. My first thought was the memory, so I unplugged it and put it into my Abit Kt7 motherboard. It worked flawlessly at cas2. The problem is not the memory, which btw is recommended by Crucial for the K7T. I decided to change the memory to a different slot, and low and behold the beeps stopped. Only problem is that the bios did not load up. The system just hung and the monitor went into standby mode. The D-LED's on the mobo indicate that it is "initializing the keyboard controller." The keyboard is brand new as well, and I have tried three different ones. I have also used my own Mosel Vitelic cas2 ram and it did not work either. The ram slot that "accepted" the memory without beeping also started to beep after I replaced the memory, so now I get beeps no matter what slot the memory is in. Keep in mind that both of these sticks work in my Abit KT7 at cas2 and neither of them seem to work on the MSI. I don't see this being a processor problem because it was brand new, and I properly installed the HSF, which I had previous experience doing. So to sum up our problems i'll re-list them briefly:

*Two good sticks of memory are apparently being rejected. (I get a beep every three seconds when I power up)

*The D-LED's indicate that it is "initializing the keyboard controller."

*I cannot get into the bios at all. Either the system hangs, or I get continous beeps.

I am really at my wits end because I have tried everything I can think of and nothing works. I have individually tested every component of his system, except the processor and motherboard, because I dont feel like screwing with my processor and HSF since they're so fragile. As I said previously the memory, video card, HDD, FDD, CD-RW, PS have all been tested and work. So I *think* I have narrowed the problem down to either the processor or the motherboard, with the latter being the most likely culprit. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys,
Ben

**Update**

I just turned the system back on and the beeping stopped. The system is still hanging, and I noticed that when I power on, the lights on the Keyboard DO light up for a second, which means that it is getting power. The D-LEDs still show that is is trying to "initializing the keyboard controller." I still have no accesss to the bios.

**Update #2**

I have done some testing and have found that sometimes the motherboard will beep and other times it will not. I have placed ram into slot 1, booted up and gotten a beeping sound. I unplug the ps, remove the ram, put it back into slot 1(the same slot it was in before, boot up again and there is no beeping sound. I find this to be extremely odd since I didnt change anything.

Double check EVERYTHING, reseat all cards and make sure they are in correctly. If that still doesn't work maybe try your CPU? Its very rare to get a bad CPU but it can happen during shipping etc... Its more likely the MB, MSI is good quality but no matter what company you get there is always a chance you get a bad mobo.

I'm thinking it's probably the motherboard. If the keyboard controller is actually the culprit, you'll have to buy a brand new mobo. But, of course, make sure you have checked all other hardware before jumping to this conclusion.

I just removed all IDE devices and I just have the CPU, memory, video card and keyboard plugged into the motherboard. I am now getting beeps every two seconds and still gettting what I think is a keyboard error. What I am getting on the LED's from top to bottom is red, green, red, red. I think I might just pick up a board at a local place where I can return it and see if the board is the culprit.

Yes, my first K7T Pro did exactly what you are describing and needed replacing (I bought it virtually as soon as it arrived in Australia) I'm running two of them at present.

Don't allow this to put you off of the MSI K7T Pro, as was said above, even the best boards ocassionally ships bad. When this board works, it works flawlessly (you'll need to disable fast-writes for the geforce2 like any other KT133 board though).

Darn. I guess the motherboard is the culprit then. It's good to know that at least someone has had this exact problem. Thanks.
