Trying to have a certain programs use only a certain connection.

I have a VPN setup on a Windows XP Pro computer, I have several programs I need to make sure only use that as their connection. On occasion the VPN get's disconnected for a few minutes, I don't want the programs to be able to use the plain old LAN connection. I tried setting this up with windows xp firewall, didn't seem to work at all. Anyone know of a good way to do this? Also, how do you set a VPN to autoreconnect, and retry for a certain amount of tries?
 
Autoreconnection is a program feature and varies. And as long as the computer has a default gateway I don't think there is a way to have it hold programs for the VPN.
