Trying to get Xbox 360 controller working on my PC

I just got my Xbox 360 controller in the mail, and realized it won't fit into any of the USB ports on my computer. Do I need some kind of adaptor? Some quick googling seems to indicate that usb 1 and usb 2.0 are compatible, but the plug on this controller is significantly larger than those of my mouse, joystick etc.

Here's a picture. If it's not clear, the xbox usb is about a milometer taller and wider than the one for my keyboard.

There was also a plastic sheath around it the plug on the xbox controller that I removed, thinking it was packaging, but in retrospect, it probably wasn't :p. But even with that removed it's too big to fit into any of my usb ports.

Here is a shot of the plug on the xbox controller:

It comes attached to the controller.

See the 2nd to last photo for this item:

If you bought it used/open-box/as-is, then you'll need to purchase the adapter. If you bought it as a new item, it's not.

Edit after your edit w/ pics: that is not the end of a wired Xbox 360 controller. It looks like an original XBox controller end.

What's it called then (the adaptor), because the one I bought new didn't come with one?

I would call it an item to return as an item that is not what was described, if it was sold as a Xbox 360 controller. Your photo shows a ferrite bead where there should be the adapter.

Short of wiring in a USB connector, and hoping (since it doesn't look like an official controller), I'm not sure. I've never seen such an adapter, because the adapter(s) you're intended to use fits the official controllers.

A wired XBox 360 controller should either end directly in a USB-A male, or the adaptable little round connector, with an inline adapter fitted to it or included. If it ended in that, you could purchase a, "breakaway cable," but that's not what you have. It looks like what you have is a 3rd-party Xbox-only controller.

Yep, that's most definitely an original Xbox controller, I know because for some reason I still have one kicking around my place even though the unit is long gone. If that was sold to you as a 360 controller then you need to return it.

Does it look like this:
(if it does, it's the OLD xbox controller, as many others have pointed out)

That's definitely the plug from an Xbox controller and not an Xbox 360 controller. It can be made to work with a little soldering, but you should absolutely return it if it was sold as a 360 controller.
