Trying to get subtitles to work for a video

I have an avi video file and a subtitle file to go along with it (.sub), so i tried to load both on VLC media player with the file-->open file

then i clicked on subtitle options right below it. hit settings, then browsed for the .sub file...

but when i started the video it didn't have the subtitles playing

any idea of what's wrong?

I don't mind using another program to run it if it will work
 
i downloaded another subtitles for it which ended in .srt, so maybe vlc doesn't support .sub? I dunno, i fixed my problem though thanks.
