I tried to format my xp computer but it won't allow it saying that it cannot lock the drive. the volume is still in use. It asks me if i want to force a dismount. i type 'y' and it says force failed. Then returns me to the initial command prompt. WHat do i do?

try putting in a linux distro and using whatever program they use to like disk druid etc and you can delete the partition easily that way (hopefully) and then pop your windows disc back in and go at it makin the new partition 🙂 At least that is what I would do.

Why do you want to format? Why don't you just do a restore using the restore CD? This system is obviously a brand name system with some kind of protection in the boot sector. You can still force a format by using a third party software like partition magic or using a regular XP installation CD and deleting the present partition and recreating a new one. And if this still doesn't work, then download a hdd utility and do the same. Delete the partition and recreate it.
