My parents are paying for 1.5mbps via DSL. It's some type of fiber to the curb setup. They just have a ethernet cable coming in to the house.

Any ideas?
Thanks!

If you're confident that nobody is leaching off the connection then it would be time to call the ISP as those numbers are well below 1.5mbps and you've tried multiple setups that rule out a router issue.

Sorry bud, you got IFITL. (Integrated Fiber In The Loop). Bellsouth's failed foray into the "Fiber to the home" concept. Unfortunately the IFITL implementation was very poor and it's routing is notably bad.

The "real" problem - is that it's oversold. They bring out 10mbits to the hub, and sell it to a hundred people provisioned at 1.5/1.5 in most cases. 10mbit is the absolute max speed, but as you see - it's best effort. If you look carefully you won't see any guarantee of speed at any point anywhere. They utilize traffic shaping so your speed will go up and down throughout the day. There really isn't anything you can do besides call and complain. There isn't really any signal issue - they terminate to an RJ-45 10mbit/half duplex - and you log in via pppoe.

If you ever wanted to know what was in those boxes - Ray Vaughn is a ham radio operator down here in sunny south FL.

Tomorrow I will call AT&T and see what they can do. If we can somehow get traditional DSL that would work. Charter has 15Mbps for $30/month I might try to them into giving us the promo rate of $20/month for life.

Then I also have to convince my parents to shell out a little more per month.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure that it wasn't on our end

Just got off the phone with AT&T:

I don't know what this means but I was hoping better than a D

If this doesn't stay consistant they will be switching to charter. Unless you guys have better ISPs. (30518)

 I have Charter myself and tend to get great speeds. Dealing with them can be unforgiving sometimes but their quality of service isn't bad.

They can get 15Mbps down/3Mbps upload from Charter for $19.99 Tests are often much faster.

That's cheap for that speed. I was paying $32/mo for 3Mbit DSL on Verizon, before I switched to FIOS. Now I'm paying >$100/mo for 25/25 and cable TV.

Is that just an intro rate?

Be careful about Internet Phone Charges. Typically ads talk about phone charges of like $30.00 per month, but then they use ATT rates and by the time they add on all the line taxes, fees, and surcharges the real Phone bill is like $70.00 a month with no real savings. It is the same price as paying for 2 Cell Phones. No real savings found. It is an advertising trick, and then they also mess up your phone lines when they install the IP Phones.

I hate how they advertise. The adds always say "Up to ___mbps." This means nothing! Let them advertise the guaranteed lowest speed. That is the number you want. Tell them to guarantee the lowest speed and if you fall below that, you should demand lower rates. They are not guaranteeing anything. It is misleading advertising.

Who is "they" and "them"?

99% of the time (with charter) the results I get exceed their advertized speed.

12:43 in the afternoon and I still get this;

while paying for 15/3

Any idea on what modems to look at?

I'm still using the ambit modem I purchased from them. It is Docsis 2.0 capable and works well. They will try to set you up with a modem/router hybrid which is OK for convenience sake but I don't like the "rental" fee.

As long as the modem is Docsis 2.0 or up you're fine. Was thinking of getting a surfboard from Motorola since you brought it up.
