Trying to fix half-broken View Sonic VE175b

My friend gave me his half working monitor and he told me the back light probably needed to be replaced. Im not sure if he is correct.

When I plug in the monitor and turn it on, it comes on nice and clear like its working, but just for about 2 seconds and then the screen goes about 99% black. You can see about 1% of the picture if you look really close.

Does anyone have any input on what might be the problem?

The problem is that you aren't listening to your friend

But in all seriousness, it sounds like the backlight. You'll have to replace the circuit board that powers it.

Well I googled around and found that it could also be the monitor power supply... i really want to fix this thing

It's definitely either the backlight power inverter or the backlight fluorescent tubes.

Maybe, but that'd be uncommon. The majority of the cases when I get in LCD's exhibiting that behavior, it's the backlight power inverter, as Seggybop mentioned.

omg roflmao hahah!! I opened up the monitor to look around and I had the thought that maybe some wires were just lose, so I pushed on the two top conectors on the backlight power inverter and turns out one was just a slight bit lose, as it snapped back in when I pushed on it. Also I think the middle wire on that same part was a little lose because it did the same thing. So I did that and tried out the monitor and now it stays on permanently and has been for about 30 minutes now. So, now I got a free LCD monitor out of it, woot!!!!

Anyway, keep that in your tech notes. Maybe this model is just prone to having lose connectors.
