Trying to find the Speed

I have just spent the most agonizing hour of my life trying to get an answer to this. In a perfect world generally how long would it take to transfer 1GB of data over a network. We have a linksys SRW2024 which is a Gigabit Switch and all computers have the proper gigabit cards. Just a general idea how long would it take if my system configuration was exactly how it needed to be to have perfect (ha ha) performance. Any help would be so greatly appreciated.

Gig isn't the bottleneck.

Your computer is.

However, gig ethernet can run at 95-99% utilization.

so...

1000 Mbs = 125 MBs.

Or 1000 MB/125 MBs = 8 seconds.
 
Don't get carried away by the superheros. Mere mortals usually transfer files at around 30 MB/s, because that's around the average performance of an average single drive -- that would be around 30s. 50 MB/s would be termed good performance -- 20s. Very good performance is around 70 MB/s - 14s. Best I've personally done so far is around 80 MB/s - 12.5s. Perfect is 8s.

Perfect fast ethernet would of course be 10x slower than perfect gigabit -- 80s.

Now compare these subjectively 80s vs. 30s., 14s vs. 8s. So the worst gigabit is a lot better than the ultimate fast ethernet, and very good gigabit is not much worse than the ultimate gigabit (which you'll never get).
